William (Bill) E. Hayward

William (Bill) E. Hayward assumed leadership of Hayward Lumber Company in 1993.  He currently holds the positions of President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chief Sustainability Officer.  Under Bill’s direction, the company has grown from $33,000,000 in annual sales to $112,000,000.  This growth has included an environmentally focused, award winning showroom design center in Santa Barbara, the world’s only solar-powered roof truss manufacturing plant for which Hayward received the coveted Gold LEED Certification - Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, the benchmark of environmental stewardship. Hayward also includes a force of six lumberyards and six design centers.

Hayward has become a national leader in the supply of sustainable (green) building products.  They were the first full-line lumberyards in the USA to stock FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified lumber that comes from sustainably managed forests and the first to eliminate arsenic pressure treated wood from their  product line in 2001, well before the EPA made the sale of such product illegal for residential use.  Hayward is committed to building all of its own facilities using the latest principles in green building and building science. Additionally, Hayward is pioneering a business model that incorporates the principles of sustainability into its business practices thus reducing its own environmental footprint.

EDUCATION - Bill earned a BS at UCLA in Political Theory, attended Semester At Sea, and attended the Monterey Institute of International Studies Intensive Language Program in Spanish as well as attending MBA classes.

CIVIC ACTIVITIES - He is currently Chairman of the Board on the Forest Stewardship Council US.  Past Board Service includes the Board of Directors of The Monterey Institute of International Studies and Board of Directors for the Big Sur Environmental Center.  He is a Monterey Peninsula native.
