How to Apply to become a Certified Green Business

We have designed a fun and easy path for your business to become certified: the Green Business Academy. The Green Business Academy is a series of four workshops to give you the tools and training necessary to green your business operations. It will give you a cohort of other businesses to network with and lean on to achieve certification.

Contact us today to participate in the next Academy beginning February 22, 2017 at the Wildling Museum of Art & Nature in Solvang for North County area businesses and February 23, 2017 in Goleta at the offices of Santa Barbara Airbus for South County area businesses.  Both workshops will run from 3:00 to 5:00.

Green Business Academy Workshops

Academy workshops are the foundation; this is where you will learn the requirements for certification.

Workshops will cover:

  • How to use and complete our online checklists
  • How to meet program requirements in the areas of recycling, purchasing, energy and water conservation and efficiency, pollution prevention, and ridesharing
  • Meet other like-minded businesses and learn from each other

There will be two separate kickoff workshop events to accommodate businesses from throughout our community.

Two subsequent workshops will be held via webinar in March and April, 2017. Webinars will address various program requirements and will be live forums to discuss challenges and share successes as you move through the program. Each webinar will be led by program staff and local experts in the areas of recycling, energy efficiency, water conservation, pollution prevention and ridesharing.

Also during this time period, businesses will be able to check in with program staff and arrange for on-site meetings at their businesses when they are ready for hands-on technical assistance and verification that they are implementing required measures.

The final workshop will held after the scheduled webinars in May with the goal of wrapping up and hearing from you about the process.

A celebratory luncheon will be held the following February (2018) to publicly acknowledge business achieving certification.

If you are unsure whether or not you will be able to join us on these dates or commit to the overall time requirement, please contact us to discuss possibilities.

Fees

During the application process, your business will pay a small fee to participate. The fee is based on a sliding scale ranging from $300 to $600, depending on the number of employees and the type of business.  Businesses who are being re-certified pay half the original certification fee.

Checklist Requirements

The Green Business checklists are a set of requirements established by Green Business Programs state-wide. This is the tool we use to evaluate your business operations, determine sustainability measures already in place, and assist you in implementing additional measures to earn certification.

The checklists are online and are divided into sections on Energy, Waste & Recycling, Pollution Prevention, Water Conservation, Wastewater.

During the workshops you will be given the information and tools you need to meet the checklist requirements.

Green Business staff and partners will visit your business to verify and assist you in meeting the requirements.

Your business will most likely meet many of the requirements before you even get started. However, depending upon processes you already have in place and the physical location of your business, you may find the need to upgrade in certain areas such as installing low-flow plumbing fixtures or implementing a ridesharing program for your employees.

This is where the information you learn in the workshops will help – we will teach you everything you need to know to easily make any necessary changes and make you aware of any rebates available for water or lighting upgrades.
