History of the green business Program

The Green Business Program of Santa Barbara County (GBP) has been building momentum for nearly 15 years. The Central Coast’s business community recognizes that environmental responsibility and green practices not only benefit our surroundings – they hold promise of increased efficiency and greater profit.

From 1994 through 2007, the Santa Barbara County Green Awards Consortium honored up to five businesses, schools, and nonprofit organizations working to protect, preserve, and improve the environment above and beyond what is required by law. The consortuim evaluated practices for solid waste reduction and recycling, water conservation, energy conservation, hazardous waste reduction and recycling, and pollution prevention of the air, water, and soil. 

Members of the Consortium enjoyed finding and recognizing businesses demonstrating exceptional commitment or innovation in their green practices and wanted to encourage a greater number of businesses to adopt these practices. Thus, the Green Awards Consortium has transitioned to a multi-jurisdictional Green Business Program for Santa Barbara County.
